According to UNESCO (2023), ethical AI should align with institutional values and respect pedagogical intent while promoting student engagement and learning.

Another practical application of AI is as an assistant in marking. In this context, AI holds great potential for freeing up educator time, supporting grading and feedback by automating routine tasks, allowing educators to focus on more complex evaluations. However, as with authoring, AI must not be seen as a replacement of the educator instead acting as an additional perspective. 

While AI is particularly effective for objective assessments, recent advancements have shown promise in evaluating subjective work such as essays.

In the workshops, educators expressed a number of concerns around this application, with many feeling that totally relying on AI for marking allocations could inadvertently erode their professional judgment and discretion, two elements central to their role as educators.

To help overcome such limitations, AI can be used to support the feedback process by generating initial suggestions for educators to review and refine. 

For example, it can analyze a student’s essay and provide preliminary insights on structure, clarity, and relevance to the prompt. Educators can then tailor this feedback to ensure it aligns with their expertise and the student’s individual needs. This method enhances efficiency while maintaining the depth and personalization of feedback.

Ethical Considerations

As explored, ensuring fairness and mitigating bias in AI-driven grading should be at the forefront of AI as an assessment and marking assistant. 

Research has demonstrated how algorithmic bias can emerge from incomplete or skewed training data towards particular demographics, leading to disparities in grading outcomes (Karpouzis, 2024).

Similarly, research by both Yekollu, R.K., et al. 2024 and Dandachi, I.E. (2023) explored the transformative potential of AI in creating personalized learning pathways. Dandachi navigates the interplay of AI and personalized learning to discern how these elements can contribute to sustainable educational practices that promote learner-centered approaches.

However, ethical considerations must be addressed, particularly regarding demographic-based assumptions.

Institutions must ensure AI enhances rather than limits learning opportunities and experiences by avoiding algorithmic based assumptions upon things such as demographics. 

As with all areas of application, AI-driven personalization should complement human-led instruction rather than replace it Karpouzis (2024).

AI-Powered Metadata Analysis for Assessment Integrity

In this context, AI reviews metadata (e.g., submission patterns, activity logs) to detect potential integrity concerns such as academic dishonesty or misuse of AI by students. Institutions such as Boston University implemented AI-supported academic integrity guidelines to address concerns related to misconduct and data fabrication. Similarly, Harvard University provides resources on academic integrity in the age of AI, emphasizing the importance of transparency and ethical considerations in AI implementation.

AI-powered student support systems, such as chatbots and virtual assistants, represent an innovative approach to providing immediate assistance to learners. In this context, AI-powered chatbots or assistants provide 24/7 student support, answering queries and offering learning guidance. 

Studies such as Labadze et al. (2023) have highlighted the growing role of AI chatbots in education.

The research findings emphasize the numerous benefits of integrating AI chatbots in education, as seen from both students’ and educators’ perspectives. We found that students primarily gain from AI-powered chatbots in three key areas: homework and study assistance, a personalized learning experience, and the development of various skills. For educators, the main advantages are the time-saving assistance and improved pedagogy.” (Labadze et al. 2023)

Similarly, OECD (2024) identified how chatbots can help to bridge gaps in educational accessibility. For example, in regions where human resources for student support may be limited. Additionally, they can ensure access to important information, at any time, ensuring students remain engaged in their learning journey. 

However, again, there’s a clear consensus that AI should not replace direct faculty engagement. With the Labadze et al. 2023 going on to conclude that, 

“Our research also emphasizes significant challenges and critical factors that educators need to handle diligently. These include concerns related to AI applications such as reliability, accuracy, and ethical considerations.” (Labadze et al. 2023).

Ethical Considerations

Over-reliance on AI for student support may limit engagement with faculty and peers, highlighting the importance of fostering regular and open communication between educators and students, with AI only serving as an assistant when needed. 

The quality and consistency of AI output should be regularly audited and monitored to ensure high quality learning support and the absence of bias and misinformation.
