How Inspera Lets You Stay in Absolute Control of Your Data

Single Tenancy Architecture

We prioritise the distinct privacy boundaries of each institution, meaning we strictly prohibit cross-institutional data access or usage. No other institution can ever view or access your data because they are separated into individual Inspera tenancies. You can go further and subdivide your own data into separate tenancies if you wish.

Role Based Access Control

Inspera operates on a role based access control model where each user has to be granted first, a role (eg: author) and then specific access to content (eg: an item bank) in order to be able to view it. This prevents exposure of content to those not authorised and gives you confidence that only those who should have access to institutional or student data, do.

Delete as You Wish

You have the ability to archive and delete data from the platform either on the fly or at regular intervals.

Data Downloads

You may need your data stored in a different place, or for a different purpose, or combine several data points to form a bigger picture. Inspera has a multitude of download and archiving options to let you achieve this.

Personal Data

If you choose to use Inspera Proctoring, you might decide, where it’s appropriate, to record candidates and/or their screens. We know that this category of sensitive data requires sensitive handling. It can only be viewed in Inspera by those with specific access privileges.

Sharing by Choice

We know there are instances where you do want to share data with other institutions, but that is and always should, be an explicit decision by you, not us. With Inspera Originality, you can opt-in to share your submission repository with other Inspera Originality institutions. But that’s your decision, not ours.

Control of your data is one thing, but when comfortable that we place that control squarely on you, you need to be confident that we are looking after your data in the right way. We do that though privacy by design and deliberate architectural decisions on your data in transit and at rest.

Privacy by Design

The concept of Privacy by Design isn’t a regulatory checkbox for us; it is hardcoded into the continuous evolution of Inspera. Our core technical measures are built entirely around the philosophy of data minimisation:

Risk Mitigation First: We proactively carry out rigorous risk assessments to ensure data subjects are never exposed to unnecessary vulnerability.

Strict Data Minimisation: We never process or store a single piece of personal information beyond what is strictly required to deliver. Inspera Assessment uses a single student identifier that you choose, not us, within the platform.

Anonymisation: We use pseudonymised identities through Single Sign-On (SSO) integrations whenever possible.

Safeguards: Hosted securely on AWS in the EU, Inspera operates on a strict no-data-loss hosting model with logical separation of individual customer environments. This environment is safeguarded by strict access controls, mandatory employee background checks, and comprehensive annual training on information security.

Protection in Transit and at Rest

Data security cannot have weak links. Inspera ensures that from the moment a student uploads an assignment to the moment an educator grades it, that data is locked behind industry leading encryption.

Encrypted in Transit (TLS 1.2+): Inspera Assessment strictly enforces HTTPS for all communications. This mandatory encryption protocols prevents intercept or tampering between the user’s device and our system, protecting the privacy and structural integrity of the exchanged data.

Encrypted at Rest (AES-256): All data residing in our system is encrypted using AES-256, the global benchmark for military and government-grade protection.

Tamper-Proof File Uploads: When a file is uploaded, its metadata is instantly verified and signed with an encrypted signature returned to the client. Amazon S3 then cross-checks this signature using strict checksum controls to guarantee that no corruption or unauthorised alteration occurred during transmission.

Encrypted Backups: Our data backups are mirrored with the same AES-256 encryption. Managed through AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS), our encryption keys are isolated so stringently that it prevents anyone, including AWS employees, from accessing the raw data.
